New Zealand Department of Conservation

The New Zealand Department of Conservation (DoC), is the government department charged with conserving New Zealand’s natural and historic heritage for all to enjoy now and into the future.

The Department aims to foster education, and make the areas it manages accessible for the public to enjoy and appreciate safely.

SAR Role

As the manager of public conservation land where many SAR’s occur DOC personnel often provide the initial response resource when a SAR incident occurs. At Aoraki/Mt Cook DOC provides the high alpine SAR response on behalf of the NZ Police and this is covered by a MOU between the DOC Area Office and the NZ Police. In addition many DOC staff volunteer there own time as LandSAR personnel on SARs.
