Rescue Coordination Centre of New Zealand

Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand (RCCNZ)

RCCNZ is a joint rescue coordination centre and operates 24 hour, seven days a week all year and is staffed with a minimum of two internationally qualified Search and Rescue Officers (SAROs).  The RCCNZ is located on the first floor of the Avalon Film and Television Studios in Lower Hutt.

Organisation

As a unit of Maritime New Zealand’s Safety and Response Group, RCCNZ also combines with the Maritime Operation Centre (MOC), located in the adjacent Avalon Business Centre, for the coordination of maritime safety information throughout a region comparable to the New Zealand Search and Rescue Region.

SAR Role

RCCNZ is New Zealand’s national search and rescue organisation responsible for coordinating all Category II SAR events in the New Zealand Search and Rescue Region.  This is an area of 30 million square Kilometres extending half way to Australia, halfway to Chile and from just south of the equator to the South Pole.

RCCNZ is also New Zealand’s designated agency for the maintenance of the distress beacon’s database:  i.e. EPIRBs, PLBs and ELTs.  Registrations are a legal requirement and is FREE via www.beacons.org.nz and then by clicking on “Click here to Register for Free”.
