Safer Walking Framework

"Supporting, educating and reducing the risk of people that, potentially or actually, get lost of go missing due to cognitive impairment in NZ."

This page is a resource centre for members of the safer walking stakeholder reference group. If you have resources to be added to this page, please contact the Secretariat.

The purpose of developing this ‘Safer Walking’ strategy is to enhance connectivity and awareness of the ‘safer walking’ (known by SAR agencies as ‘wander’) sector in order to achieve greater alignment and coordination in the support and provision of services for people with cognitive impairment who potentially and actually get lost or go missing.

Safer Walking (Wander) Partnership Framework (March 2013)

The Safer Walking Stakeholder Reference Group provides collective leadership to the safer walking sector.

NZ Police and Alzheimers NZ MOU (August 2011)

The National Ethics Advisory Committee (NEAC) has provided advice on the ethical issues associated with the use of tracking devices for people living with dementia. The use of this technology is a positive step, but needs to be considered on a case by case basis. The full advice is available here.

Safer Walking Profile

The Safer Walking Profile is a risk reduction tool designed for anyone who is at risk of going missing when walking. The Safer Walking Profile form contains vital information about the person at risk which can be given to police at the time the person is reported as missing.
