Stopping SAR activity after a suspension

Page updated: 30 November 2020

If you're the Incident Controller, you need to make sure all SAR activity stops after the operation is suspended.

Tell all SAR resources to stop SAR activities

SAR activity should not continue after a suspension because it:

  • uses valuable resources
  • increases the risk of something happening to SAR resources due to inadequate monitoring
  • creates confusion about the status of the operation and its quality
  • can suggest  that the decision to suspend is in doubt and will raise false hope for family and others.

Ask SAR resources who do not agree with the suspension to communicate this

SAR resources who have information or recommendations about continuing the SAR operation must communicate this immediately to the Incident Controller.

All SAR operations that are suspended must have a formal debrief to fully examine the rationale for the suspension.
