SAR Prevention

Providing the public with the appropriate information so they can either avoid distress situations or survive them should they occur is at the heart of our search and rescue prevention goal.

We support a cohesive approach to search and rescue prevention initiatives and collaborate with partner organisations who have a role in SAR prevention. We enhance personal responsibility through information, education, regulation, investigation, and enforcement.

SAR Prevention

Research

We are developing a bi-annual BePA (benchmarking prevention activity) that will map and observe the long-term impact of prevention initiatives delivered by the sector, and the influence they are having on SAR in the New Zealand recreational landscape over time.

AdventureSmart

AdventureSmart provides a myriad of prevention related resources. It connects recreationalists to guides, apps, videos and other online tools that are created and maintained by the wider New Zealand SAR sector.

The sector-wide Safety Codes (Boating, Water and Outdoor) anchor AdventureSmart, and are supported by practical tips and links, as well as featuring translated copies of the Codes in many languages.

Tiaki

Tiaki – Care for New Zealand is a successful collaboration between multiple governmental and tourism agencies, and involving local hapu to deliver SAR prevention messaging to international visitors.

These messages are delivered in a short video, explaining the elements of the 'Be prepared' pou (pillar). Each message element is also available individually, for use on social media.
